Mid 19th Century Rosewood Central Standing Buffet Shelves

19th century
Description

An Extremely Unusual And Very Good Quality Mid 19th Century William IV Period Rosewood Central Freestanding Buffet, Or Shelves, Having Three Exceptionally Well Figured Tiers, Raised On Elegant Moulded Scrolling End Supports, With Attractive Foliate Carved Decoration, Terminating On Attractive Block Scrolling Fet.

This is a really unusual object from the mid 19th century. It appears to be somewhat of a hybrid cross between a typical buffet and a set of freestanding shelves. Both of these items were of course incredibly popular during the 19th century and remain so to this day.

Overall the quality is really very good indeed with a great choice of rich, well figured rosewood timbers and the small amount of carved decoration being rich and crisp. The end supports are also incredibly well executed in terms of their shape and therefore the elegance of the piece overall and this is something which really adds to it.

It is also incredibly functional, boasting three flat surfaces which are of slighty varying sizes and it can be used in both the middle of a room, or to the side against a wall. The fact it is quite shallow makes it even more useful and desirable.

As with all the objects which we offer for sale it has been inspected by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that it is in the optimum condition possible and ready for immediate placement.

This item is incredibly useful and functional and also incredibly elegant. Its certainly something which would add aesthetically to any room which it is placed in, but also it would add great function as well.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A mid-19th century standing buffet shelf unit is an open-tier piece of storage furniture designed to display tableware, books, or decorative objects. Popular during the Victorian era, these pieces often featured polished hardwoods, carved uprights, and open accessibility from multiple sides.

Tiered display shelves from this period were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut. Craftsmen utilised solid timber alongside cut veneers to highlight distinct grain patterns across the flat surfaces.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative brackets, hand-jointed shelf supports, and distinct dark brown to reddish grain striations characteristic of natural rosewood. Inspection of the undersides typically reveals period hand-saw marks and original fixing hardware.

An open rosewood shelving unit functions well as a room divider or side wall feature. Modern interiors pair the dark wood tones with minimalist ceramics, framed artwork, or foliage to create contrast against neutral walls.

Dust surfaces regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Apply a high-grade beeswax polish periodically along the grain lines to protect the timber, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying or fading.
