Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A box settle is a traditional wooden bench featuring a high backrest, armrests, and a hinged seat that lifts to reveal a large internal storage box. Originating in medieval Europe, these multi-functional pieces provided both seating and secure storage in entryways and main living halls.

Nineteenth-century oak settles were constructed using solid timber, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and hand-carved decorative panels. The framework was joined with wooden dowels or pegs, and seats were fitted on heavy iron or wooden hinges to withstand daily use.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detail with slight variations in symmetry, historical hand-tool marks, and natural patination in crevices. Look for pegged joinery, authentic wear along the footrest and armrests, and original iron hinges inside the storage chest.

Place a dark oak settle in an entryway or wide hallway to serve as both functional seating for shoes and hidden storage for accessories. Pair it with neutral stone flooring, warm wall finishes, and modern textiles to balance the heavy timber and intricate carving.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timber patination. Avoid silicone-based sprays, keep the item away from direct heat sources, and wipe up spills immediately to protect the finish.
