Description

Unusual late 18th century oak side table with a locking central drawer and two others, circa 1780.

This side table is a very useful size and certainly an interesting little piece of 18th century furniture.

The condition is good and has the working lock and key to the central drawer.

There is a faded mark to the table top, but I have left this as it is under many decades of beeswax and would be a shame to strip away to re finish…in my opinion, the mark does not warrant a strip as in reality it isn’t very noticeable, but under the very bright lights of the studio, it looks more visible!

18 3/4 inches or 47.5 cm high

21 1/2 inches or 54.5 cm wide

14 3/4 inches or 37.5 cm deep

A lowboy is a small table with drawers, popular during the 18th century in Britain and America. Typically set on cabriole or turned legs, it was commonly used as a dressing table or small writing desk in period homes.

English 18th-century lowboys were predominantly constructed from solid native timbers such as oak, walnut, or mahogany. Drawers were fitted with hand-forged iron locks and cast brass handles, such as swan-neck or teardrop drop pulls.
