Description

Type of artwork: Antique Original Oil Painting – mid 18th Century English School Portrait

Surface: Oil on canvas

Artist and Signature: English School, mid-18th century, Unsigned

Portrait of a Gentleman – Attributed to the Abraham Family (18th Century):

A highly decorative and atmospheric 18th century English School portrait depicting a gentleman, traditionally identified within the Abraham family line. The sitter is presented half-length, wearing a deep green coat and white cravat, set against a dark interior background typical of Georgian portraiture.

The painting displays strong period character, with softly modelled facial features, warm flesh tones, and a restrained yet confident palette. The rich green of the coat contrasts beautifully with the subdued background, giving the piece a refined and timeless presence.

Research into the Abraham family suggests a connection to John Abraham (1687–1771) of Lancashire, a figure associated with Hawkshead and later Manchester. He married Sarah Foster in 1722 and was part of a large and established family, raising numerous children within the region.

This is a striking example of Georgian portrait painting, offering both historical interest and strong interior decorative appeal.

Approximate age of artwork: Circa 1750

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Presented in a traditional wooden frame, as shown (included free of charge)

Condition Report:

The painting is in fair antique condition in line with age. There are visible signs of age including craquelure, surface wear, and minor areas of historic paint loss. On close inspection there are some creases and slight loss of paint in a few areas including around the face.

The frame shows age-related wear, including cracking and losses, and is offered free of charge with no warranty.

Overall, the painting presents very well, with strong colour retention and excellent visual impact. Please refer to the photographs for full condition details.
