Beside the stream, a young dairy maid holds a small basket, pausing near a simple wooden footbridge. Behind her, a narrow path winds away into the meadow where further cattle graze.
In the middle distance, a cottage sits partially hidden among trees and, beyond this, the landscape dissolves into a soft atmospheric haze.
The painting depicts a view at Midgham in Berkshire, situated within the Kennet Valley. It was likely produced during the 1880s or 1890s. Several elements support this date, including the materials and canvas construction.
Henry Hillingford Parker trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London and painted extensively in the home counties.
Signed in the lower right and held in a late 19th-century gilt frame with ornate scrolling foliate decoration.
