The composition follows the romantic landscape tradition popularised in the early Victorian period, with atmospheric blue distance, detailed architectural ruins, and warm foreground foliage framing a small staffage figure. The work demonstrates confident pencil underdrawing and controlled washes, typical of the mid-19th century topographical tradition. The sheet has been laid down onto a later backing, likely during a past reframing.”
