“A finely executed mid-19th century English watercolour depicting Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire, viewed from an elevated picturesque vantage point above the River Swale. The composition follows the romantic landscape tradition popularised in the early Victorian period, with atmospheric blue distance, detailed architectural ruins, and warm foreground foliage framing a small staffage figure. The work demonstrates confident pencil underdrawing and controlled washes, typical of the mid-19th century topographical tradition. The sheet has been laid down onto a later backing, likely during a past reframing.”
