Unframed Watercolour Portrait Circa 1820

Description

Portrait of a gentleman seated in an interior before a damask drape holding a letter. It includes nice costume details including his gold seals.

Watercolour with gum arabic on card laid on lighter weight card with a painted black border and then backed with another sheet with an intriguing life drawing with Latin inscriptions on the reverse. Undated but it could be earlier than the portrait.

Some spotting across the gentleman's coat but otherwise good. The backing drawing has foxing rough edges. A fascinating item. Sold unframed.
