Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A metamorphic portrait is an interactive novelty artwork popular during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. It features a central miniature portrait accompanied by multiple cut-out paper or mica overlays depicting various outfits and headwear, allowing the owner to change the sitters costume.

These sets were executed on fine hand-laid paper or thin mica sheets using watercolour and gouache pigments. The costume overlays featured precise hand-cut apertures for the face and neck to seamlessly reveal the central painted portrait beneath.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted watercolour details, period-appropriate pigments, natural paper aging or foxing, and fine hand-cut edges on the apertures. Period costume styles typically mirror the fashions of the Georgian and Regency eras, ranging from regional dresses to military attire.

A set of overlays is best preserved and displayed by float-mounting the pieces inside custom museum-quality frames with UV-protective glass. Grouping the central portrait and its attire in a grid creation on a gallery wall provides an intriguing historical focal point.

Keep paper works away from direct sunlight, fluorescent lighting, and areas of high humidity or fluctuating temperatures. Always use acid-free, archival mounting materials and consult a professional paper conservator for cleaning or stabilization.
