Oil Painting of Venice by Basil Nubel 1923-1981

A fine and decorative oil on canvas of Saint Mark’s Square in Venice by the artist Basil Nubel 1923-1981. The painting is typical of the artist with a strong use of colour in a post-impressionist manner depicting the elaborate architecture and movement of the people in the busy square. The piece is in excellent untouched condition and is signed to the lower left, it also bears and exhibition label to the back giving the title: ‘The High Renaissance’. Basil Nubel was a landscape painter in oil and watercolour born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, to an English mother and German father. Nubel studied at Leeds College of Art under Alfred Daniels and Maurice de Sausmarez, then at the Royal College of Art under Carel Weight, Robert Buhler and Rodrigo Moynihan. He was one of Jack Beddington's 'Young Artists of Promise' and lived in London. The work is framed in a later period frame that works very well with the piece and the whole is in excellent condition. C1960.
