Fine 18th Century Flemish Carved Oak Settle, C1720

18th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Fine quality antique 18th century Oak settle/bench with void interior under hinged lid, c 1720. This is a quality piece ,I think from the carving it is Flemish. The quality of the carving is very good with the front ,sides, arms and upper pediment all profusely decorated. The upper pediment has a lovely carved face and there are 6 panels across the front depicting various scenes/ persons in historic dress. It has aged well with great patina, a real deep colour that only old wood can achieve. Overall condition is good with small areas of historic woodworm (treated anyway) and minor surface wear in line with age and use, but all very much as you would expect from something that is 300 years old. I am not sure if the hinges are original or not, if not they certainly have some age? Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.

Size: 123 cm tall x 122 cm long x 43 cm deep . I will happily ship worldwide, but this is a relatively large/ heavy item so please contact me for a bespoke quote for your Country.

Date of Manufacture

Curious Antiques has dated this Flemish Carved Oak Settle to the 18th Century.

This 18th century Flemish Baroque settle measures 123 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. It takes the form of an antique bench constructed from dark brown oak with brass hardware, featuring a void interior accessible beneath a hinged seat lid. The dark timber has a rich patina with visible surface wear, historic woodworm marks, and decorative mouldings framing six figurative relief panels on the backrest and three on the chest base. The upper pediment holds a central carved bust medallion, flanked by scrolled armrests and extensive profuse carving across the front, sides, and arms. Suitable for placement in a traditional hallway, living room, or study, this settle provides both seating and hidden storage within the chest base. It offers practical utility for everyday seating while functioning as a decorative architectural focal point in a domestic interior. The sturdy timber construction accommodates regular daily use while maintaining its historic appearance.

FAQs

A Flemish oak settle is a high-backed wooden bench originating from Flanders during the 17th and 18th centuries, typically featuring elaborate relief carvings and integrated storage beneath the seat.

These pieces were built using solid European oak joined with pegged mortise-and-tenon construction, often embellished with hand-carved relief panels and hand-forged iron or brass lock plates.

Look for hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular pegged joints, age-related wood shrinkage, and deep, dark oxidisation within the recessed areas of the hand-carved panels.

Positioning the bench in an entryway or hallway creates a structural focal point, which can be balanced with neutral linen textiles or minimalist contemporary wall lights.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
