Antique Silver Electa Pocket Watch and Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver Electa pocket watch and chain.

The watch has a high grade Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 44mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is 935 silver, so slightly purer than sterling silver, and has Glasgow import marks for 1925. The case has some unevenness to the back but otherwise it is in nice condition.

The acrylic lens is in nice condition.

The dial has original blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute markers. There are a couple of short faint hairlines to the edge between 7 and 8 but otherwise it is in nice condition.

The watch comes with a silver double chain which is hallmarked for Birmingham 1925, with a maker’s mark for William Walter Cashmore. Each of the links has the silver lion mark. Each length of chain measures 20cm including the T-bar and the clasp. Also included is a later 1936 silver fob with traces of an inscription to the reverse.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An open-face pocket watch features a protective glass crystal over the dial without a hinged metal cover, allowing the time to be read directly. Popularised in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these timepieces were favoured for quick readability and were frequently worn attached to a waistcoat chain.

Antique silver pocket watches generally feature sterling silver or silver-alloy cases, vitreous white enamel dials, steel hands, and clear glass crystals. The internal mechanical movements utilise brass plates, steel pinions, and synthetic jewel bearings.

Authentic antique silver pocket watches feature official assay hallmarks stamped inside the case back indicating silver purity, location, and date letters. Additional identification markers include hand-finished mechanical movements, maker signatures on the dial or balance cock, and period-appropriate serial numbers.

An antique pocket watch can be worn traditionally with a waistcoat or lapel chain for tailored attire, or styled as a decorative desktop accessory on a specialised display stand. The accompanying chain and fob can also be reinterpreted as bespoke jewellery pieces or layered pendants.

Store the timepiece in a dry, low-humidity environment away from strong magnetic fields. Gently clean the exterior silver case with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid polishes near the winding stem, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years.
