Unusual Antique Goliath Pocket Watch with Chain

1900 - 1920
Description

Unusual antique goliath pocket watch with chain.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which is engraved with the wording, ‘Horlogerie Suisse

B Vangraeschife, Hazebrouck’ which is in northern France.

The watch measures 64mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is a white metal, possibly a low grade silver. The design is unusual as it has an image of a clerk’s office to the back, an early image as he is writing with a quill. The case is in very nice condition, as is the glass lens, just some reflection showing in places.

The dial looks very good to the naked eye, there is a very faint short hairline which is just visible with a jeweller’s loupe. Pin set hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

The watch comes with a single chain, 33cm long.

The watch and chain come in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Goliath pocket watches are oversized mechanical timepieces produced predominantly during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, designed to be carried in heavy pockets or displayed in dedicated desktop stands.

These timepieces were typically constructed with nickel, silver-plated alloy, or solid sterling silver cases, fitted with fired white enamel dials, blued steel hands, and glass crystals.

Authentic period examples feature mechanical keyless or key-wind movements, transfer-printed or hand-painted enamel dials with Roman numerals, and relevant hallmarks or maker marks stamped inside the case back.

These large timepieces are frequently displayed on an antique watch stand or velvet-lined dome placed on a desk, mantelpiece, or bookshelf alongside leather-bound volumes.

Store the timepiece in a dry environment to prevent oxidisation, wind the mechanical winding mechanism gently without forcing the crown, and clean the metal casing with a dry microfibre cloth.
