Antique Silver Pocket Watch, Oddfellows, 1918

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique silver pocket watch, Oddfellows, 1918.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which has an inscription, ‘Presented by loyal city of Canterbury Lodge 3743, to Bro W A Joad Prov G M, Canterbury District, M U Oddfellows, 1941, for his services to Oddfellowship’.

The watch measures 49mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London 1918 with a sponsor’s mark for Arthur Rendell. In 1907, an act came into force which meant that all imported watches had to be assayed in a UK assay office and marked with British import hallmarks. For this, a sponsor's mark was required. In this particular case, Arthur Rendell was an employee, and probably in charge, of the department that handled imported watches at a company called Pringles, the UK's largest wholesalers of jewellery, silverware, clocks and watches, so it was deemed relevant to use his initials.

The watch was already 23 years old when it was awarded, perhaps second hand was more economical as the watch was presented in the middle of the second World War.

Overall, the case is in good condition, just an indentation to the back where it has been pushed shut.

The glass lens has a couple of short scratches, not too detrimental at all… some white natural light reflection showing in the main photo.

The dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An open-face pocket watch features a dial protected directly by a glass crystal without a hinged metal front cover. During the early 20th century, these timepieces typically incorporated sub-seconds dials, porcelain or enamel faces, and clear Arabic numerals for practical legibility.

Cases were commonly manufactured from sterling silver, nickel, or gold plate, housing a hand-wound mechanical movement. Dials were predominantly made of fired white enamel, featuring blued steel hands and printed numerals.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the inside of the case back for official British hallmarks, makers marks, and serial numbers. The style of the movement, the construction of the enamel dial, and correct period provenance details further confirm the era of manufacture.

A pocket watch can be worn traditionally in a waistcoat pocket attached via an Albert chain, or placed in a jacket breast pocket. Alternatively, it can be presented indoors under a glass display dome or on a specialised watch stand on a desk or mantelpiece.

To preserve a mechanical movement, wind the mechanism gently once a day without forcing the crown. Moisture, magnetic fields, and direct water exposure must be avoided, and the internal movement should be professionally cleaned and lubricated by a horologist every three to five years.
