Antique Waltham Pocket Watch, 1908

1900 - 1920
Description

Antique Waltham pocket watch, 1908.

The watch has a 15-jewel stem-winding movement, Sterling grade, which is working nicely. The movement is fully signed and it has the serial number 16,697,495 which dates it back to 1908.

The watch measures 54mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is Silverode, an alloy often used in watch cases around this time and it came under various names such as Silveroid and Silverine. The front and sides of the case are in good condition, the screw-on case back has some unevenness and a few short scratches.

The thick glass lens has a few small marks but is very acceptable.

The signed dial is in lovely condition with blued steel hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Founded in Massachusetts, the Waltham Watch Company was a pioneer in American horological manufacturing, producing precision mechanical timepieces from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century. By the early 1900s, Waltham produced standardised, high-grade pocket watches that were widely used across industries, including rail transport.

Pocket watches from this era commonly featured cases made of sterling silver, nickel-silver alloy, or gold plate. The dials were traditionally crafted from fired white enamel over copper plates, paired with blued steel hands and glass or acrylic crystals.

Authenticity is verified by inspecting the movement serial number stamped inside the case back, which correlates to specific production years in historical archives. Authentic dials usually display enamelled maker signatures alongside distinct sub-second track configurations.

Antique pocket watches are often displayed in glass cloches, specialized pocket watch stands, or shadow boxes as desktop accessories. They can also be integrated into flat-lay displays alongside vintage literature and leather goods.

Mechanical timepieces should be serviced by a professional horologist every three to five years to clean and lubricate internal gears. The watch should be kept away from high humidity, extreme temperatures, and magnetic fields to preserve precision.
