FAQs

Nineteenth-century landscape painting often emphasised romanticism, atmospheric lighting, and the sublime power of nature, capturing topographical accuracy alongside emotional resonance.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched woven linen or cotton canvas, often supported by wooden stretcher frames and finished with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is assessed through examination of canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and underlying pigments visible under ultraviolet light.

An antique landscape provides a focal point when hung against neutral walls, framed in a traditional gilt or dark wood moulding to create a sophisticated contrast with contemporary furnishings.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room temperatures, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, keeping relative humidity between 40 and 50 percent, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the canvas surface.
