This nineteenth-century Balinese sculpture portrays the mythological figure Garuda in dark brown stained hardwood, finished with an openwork canopy and layered feather wings that frame the tiered composition. Multiple figures emerge from the timber surface in high relief, including a deity seated upon the central creature and a subdued dragon writhing at the base, alongside intricate facial expressions and flowing garments throughout. The entire piece measures 46 cm high, 26 cm wide and 22 cm deep. Placed upon a sideboard top or display shelf in a living room or study, this detailed work adds a focal point of traditional iconography and complex carving to an interior setting without requiring additional embellishment. The dense arrangement of elements provides varied textures from every viewing angle, showing the depth of the openwork technique applied to the hardwood material.

FAQs

In Balinese and Indonesian mythology, Garuda is a divine bird-like creature and the mount of the Hindu deity Vishnu, representing power, speed, and protection against evil forces.

Traditional Balinese statues are hand-carved from dense native hardwoods such as suar, teak, or ebony using chiseled hand tools, often finished with wax or dark stain.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible hand-chiseled tool marks, complex layered openwork depth, natural age-related wood grain variations, and gentle surface wear.

Position the sculpture as a focal accent on a neutral console table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece to introduce textural contrast, dark wood tones, and cultural interest.

Dust regularly with a soft dry brush to clean intricate recesses, avoid placement near direct heat sources to prevent timber cracking, and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to preserve the lustre.
