Description

A wonderful set of 4 antique framed Vanity Fair Spy military prints, printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son. Mounted and glazed in gilt black frames, these antique prints are a good collection to bring a little satirical humour to your wall.

Vanity Fair was a weekly magazine published in Britain from 1868 to 1914 and offered a satirical take on Victorian and Edwardian society, publishing articles on fashion, current events and the latest scandals. A full-page colour lithograph caricature of a contemporary celebrity or dignitary appeared in most issues, and it is for these caricatures that Vanity Fair is best known today. These prints are by Leslie Ward known as “Spy” or sometimes “Drawl”. Sir Leslie Matthew Ward was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were produced as watercolours and then turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine.

This set of 4 includes:

“4th Division”, A caricature portrait of General Sir Neville Gerald Lyttelton, a British Army officer from the Lyttelton family who served in the Anglo-Egyptian War and took part in the relief of Ladysmith during the Boer War. Originally published on September 5th 1901 in Vanity Fair. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.

“Field Marshall Earl Roberts”, A caricature portrait of Frederick Sleigh Roberts, a British general who became one of the most successful British military commanders of his time. Originally published on 1st February 1910 Vanity Fair a supplement to The World. By artist Leslie Ward “Spy”.

Vanity Fair prints are satirical chromolithograph caricatures published in the British weekly magazine Vanity Fair between 1869 and 1914, featuring prominent figures of the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Authentic prints were primarily produced using chromolithography, a multi-stone lithographic printing process that allowed for vibrant, layered application of colours.

Authentic pieces typically feature the artists pseudonym (such as Spy or Ape), the subjects name, the date of publication, and are printed on textured paper with a distinct plate mark or border.

These pieces work effectively when grouped together on a gallery wall to create a focal point, pairing well with traditional wooden framing and neutral wall backdrops.

To prevent fading and paper degradation, keep framed prints out of direct sunlight, maintain stable indoor humidity levels, and use acid-free backing materials when mounting.
