FAQs

Victorian watercolour paintings typically focus on naturalism, atmospheric lighting, and detailed depictions of British countryside scenery, often reflecting the romanticism of the era.

Artists of this period typically used gum arabic-based watercolour pigments applied to heavy-weight rag paper or watercolour board, often finished with protective varnishes.

Authentication involves examining paper watermarks, the ageing of the pigments, artist signatures, framing materials, and the presence of foxing or natural oxidisation consistent with the period.

Pair the artwork with simple, understated framing to let the historical piece stand out, hanging it on neutral walls with directional picture lighting to create a focal point.

Protect watercolours from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing, and ensure they are framed with acid-free mounts and UV-protective glass.
