Cantagalli Antique Pottery Luster Ware Pitcher Italian Majolica Hispano Moresque
£140 $188 €159
Antique Cantagalli lustre ware jug with botanical and geometric decor hand painted in wine red glaze. Probably 19th century. Very much in the William De Morgan flavour, which comes as no surprise. The Florentine firm Cantagalli was noted for its revival of the Hispano-moresque lustre glazes produced in the 1870''s. William de Morgan in his lecture to the Society of Arts 1892, declared that some of the best lustres he had seen were those by Cantagalli.
Background:
Cantagalli and William de Morgan were friends and collaborated closely on pottery projects. William de Morgan considered Ulisse Cantagalli a close friend, and their professional relationship, which began during one of de Morgan''s trips to the Middle East, was a significant factor in Cantagalli''s international success. The two artists worked together on projects like an Iznik-style pottery series in Florence.
Friendship and collaboration: Their friendship was built on a shared interest in historical pottery techniq...ues, particularly the lustreware and Iznik styles.
Collaborative projects: They collaborated on specific works, such as an Iznik-style vase series made while de Morgan was staying in Florence. De Morgan would also send designs to Cantagalli in Florence while working on his own pottery in England.
Mutual success: Their working relationship was so successful that it is cited as a key reason for Cantagalli''s international recognition.
