American (early 20thC) bronze sculpture ‘The Vine’ after Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (1880-1980). Marble Base. Among Frishmuth''s most acclaimed works is The Vine was initially conceived as a statuette in 1921. The sculpture depicts a nude female figure poised on tiptoe, arms extended gracefully while holding a grapevine, embodying the essence of dance and natural movement. Desha Delteil served as the model for this piece, which was awarded the Shaw Memorial Prize at the National Academy of Design in 1923. The Vine was Frishmuth''s most commercially successful work. Height 41.3cm, 20cm wide x 21.5cm deep, weight 3.6kg.
Excellent condition. Although a later copy, it exhibits nice detail and patina.
Harriet Whitney Frishmuth was born in 1880. and as a teenage she moved to Europe with her mother and sisters, residing there for eight years. During this period, she pursued artistic studies in Paris and Berlin, including brief instruction under Auguste Rodin at the École des Beaux-Arts i...n Paris. Rodin''s emphasis on capturing movement profoundly influenced her sculptural approach. She further honed her skills under Cuno von Uechtritz-Steinkirch in Berlin. Upon returning to the USA Frishmuth studied at the Art Students League of New York under Gutzon Borglum and Hermon Atkins MacNeil. Her career gained momentum in the early 20th century, with her sculptures celebrated for their graceful portrayal of the female form, often inspired by dancers. Today Frishmuth''s works are housed in numerous prestigious institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
