Netherlandish School, 18th Century – Monogrammed Old Master Oil Painting on Panel

A captivating Old Master oil painting depicting the Crucifixion at Calvary, set outside the walls of Jerusalem. Executed in the manner of the Netherlandish School, this atmospheric religious composition is offered as an 18th-century work, although its origins may possibly be earlier.

The painting is signed with a monogram and executed in oil on a wooden panel, believed to be poplar. It is presented in an attractive later frame featuring carved palmette leaf decoration, which complements the period character of the work.

Condition

Overall, the painting is in good condition for its age and displays well. It benefits from good lighting to fully appreciate the subtle details and tonal variations; the photographs were taken in direct sunlight. The panel shows evidence of a small amount of treated woodworm. The paint surface is slightly thin in places, consistent with age, and there are one or two minor scuffs, none of which detract significantly from its overall appearance.
