19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A superb example of a Regency period rosewood Canterbury, offered in showroom condition and of unusually large proportions.

Crafted from richly figured rosewood, the piece displays a deep, lustrous polish that enhances the natural beauty of the timber.

The upper section is fitted with six finely shaped dividers, providing ample space for the organised storage of sheet music, magazines, or papers. Below sits a single cockbeaded drawer with turned rosewood knobs, smoothly operating and finely detailed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a mobile piece of accent furniture featuring vertical partitions originally designed to hold sheet music or bound music volumes during the late 18th and 19th centuries. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who commissioned the first design, these pieces evolved to serve as magazine or document racks in formal living spaces.

Regency Canterburys were predominantly crafted from fine hardwoods such as rosewood and mahogany, often featuring hand-turned corner posts, slatted dividers, and base drawers with dovetail joinery. Brass castors and turned wooden handles were standard hardware components of the period.

Authentic Regency pieces feature rich, dark grain patterns characteristic of Brazilian rosewood, along with original period brass castors and hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer. Look for signs of historic hand-planing on unseen wooden surfaces and genuine age-related wear around the drawer pulls.

In contemporary interiors, a rosewood Canterbury functions seamlessly beside a lounge chair or sofa as a storage rack for art books, periodicals, or vinyl records. Its compact footprint and distinct silhouette make it a versatile accent piece for reading nooks or home libraries.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying, fading, or veneer checking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood and maintain its original patina.
