Victorian ebonised furniture often mimics exotic hardwoods like ebony through a black finish, frequently accented with contrasting marquetry, parquetry, or burr walnut veneers to create a striking visual impact inspired by Renaissance and classical revival movements.

These pieces were typically constructed from a secondary timber base, such as pine or mahogany, finished with an ebonised coating and fine burr walnut veneers, complemented by brass hardware, inlaid banding, and hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer construction.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, genuine hand-cut veneers with natural ageing and shrinkage cracks, traditional hand-applied polish finishes, and period brass or bronze mounts rather than modern cast metals.

Pair the dark, contrasting tones of the desk with neutral walls and contemporary minimalist seating to let the intricate wood grain and brass details stand out as a sophisticated focal point.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and lifting, and maintain the finish by dusting gently with a dry microfibre cloth and applying appropriate microcrystalline wax sparingly.
