FAQs

Eighteenth-century Masonic prints often depicted allegorical scenes, moral lessons, and symbolic imagery associated with Freemasonry, serving as both didactic tools and decorative items for lodge members and initiates.

These works typically utilised laid or wove paper, hand-applied watercolour pigments over copperplate or steel engravings, and were housed in timber frames with glass protection.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paper characteristics such as chain lines and watermarks, the impression left by the printing plate, the presence of genuine hand-applied watercolour rather than modern dot-matrix printing, and the ageing of the framing materials.

Pairing historical framed artworks with contemporary neutral walls creates a striking visual contrast that highlights the intricate details and age of the pieces without overwhelming the room.

Antique paper items should be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent fading and foxing, ideally displayed using UV-filtering glass and acid-free mounting materials.
