Keeley Halswelle RI (1831–1891)

Keeley Halswelle was a respected British landscape painter and illustrator, elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Born in Richmond, Surrey, he trained in London and spent much of his later life travelling through Italy and France, producing richly atmospheric landscapes and architectural scenes. His work is known for its poetic sense of place, capturing the quiet dignity of rural life and nature’s transient light.

Halswelle exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute, and internationally during the 19th century. His watercolours and illustrations were also widely published in literary and travel volumes of the period. Today, his work remains sought after for its craftsmanship, charm, and historic character.

Approximate age of artwork: Circa 1880s

Depiction or Location: Title indistinctly 'In Normandy' A beautifully rendered and atmospheric landscape watercolour, showing a peaceful rural scene believed to be in northern France.
