Oil Painting by Antoine Bouvard Snr.

A fine oil on canvas depicting a scene in the south of France by the artist Antoine Bouvard Snr. 1870-1956. The painting is typical of the artist’s work with a bold use of colour using impressionist brushwork that captures perfectly the Mediterranean light. The work is signed to the lower left ‘Pelletier’ a pseudonym used by Bouvard and on the reverse is dated to around 1920, and located as a view of Martigues. Antoine Bouvard was born in 1870 in Saint-Étienne and studied the Beaux Arts courses there where he began copying the old Masters. His style was influenced by both the Brabizon School and the Art Nouveau. He used the pseudonym Pelletier as well as others mainly for commercial reasons. Bouvard is most closely associated with painting Venice but here we see an earlier work that perfectly represents his craft and ability. The painting is in good condition it has had a small hole repaired in the sky. The work is mounted in a fine quality gilt frame which is in very good condition and probably dates to slightly later than the painting. The whole is a fine example of early twentieth century painting of the Mediterranean and is ready to hang. C.1920.
