Painted Silhouette of a Lady with Colour

19th century
Description

This attractive full-length silhouette is painted on card and shows a lady holding a lace handkerchief about to place a book on a pedestal table upon which sits another leather bound book and a small glass vase filled with colourful flowers. She wears a smoky blue dress with a pointed waistline and a fine lace collar that matches her pretty lace cap. Her watch hangs on a long black ribbon and is tucked into her waistband.

Neatly painted on card, the silhouette bears the signature 'Beaumont Fecit 1850'. It is housed in what appears to be the original bird's eye maple veneer frame with a gilt slip.

William Dyce Beaumont was a cutter of silhouettes during the 1830s and 1840s. Although he often included painted colourful tables, books and flowers in his compositions, his figures were always cut out, unlike this lady. The signature would therefore appear to be a spurious (and unnecessary) addition on what is otherwise a fine example of a 19th century silhouette.
