Etching Details: This is an original 1886 etching titled Ninette, executed by the renowned French printmaker Paul Rajon after a composition by Jean-Baptiste Greuze. It is a beautifully detailed sanguine (reddish-brown) intaglio print, with fine line work and subtle tonal shading.
 
It was published before lettering for inclusion in the Art Journal and appears to predates the later engraved version by Samuel Cousins in 1880.
 
A striking and sensitive study of a young woman with a melancholy expression, her bodice open slightly at the neck, and ribbon tied loosely in her hair.
 
Approximate age of artwork: Published over 135 years old (1886)
