This period was characterised by a focus on atmospheric lighting, en plein air techniques, and a deep engagement with the rugged topography and changing weather of the Scottish countryside.

Artists typically used oil pigments ground in linseed or walnut oil applied to stretched linen or cotton canvas, supported by wooden stretcher frames and finished with a protective varnish layer.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and any historical gallery labels or documentation on the reverse.

Antique artworks provide focal points and depth in modern rooms, working particularly well when paired with neutral walls, architectural lighting, and a mix of contemporary and vintage furnishings.

Paintings should be kept out of direct sunlight, away from sources of excessive heat or humidity, and occasionally inspected by a professional conservator for surface dust and varnish degradation.
