Artist and Signature: Yorkshire Landscape Study signed by Kershaw Schofield
Kershaw Schofield (1875-1941) was a Bradford born painter of landscapes, seascapes and flower subjects in watercolour. He also managed The Grosvenor Studio, a photographic business in Newton Street, Bradford, where he painted onto, or finished in colour, photographs of local worthies. He drew much of his inspiration from scenes around the Stoney Ridge and Cottingley countryside near his home at Chellow Grange, and was a friend to Herbert Royle, who painted in a similar style. He was also a friend of Jack Hellewell.. Kershaw exhibited prolifically with the Yorkshire Union of Artists and regularly exhibited at the Spring Open Exhibitions at Cartwright Hall.
In 1976, a former colleague of Kershaw wrote a memory of him for the Dalesman (May 1976). He wrote of the artist’s working area at the photography studio in Bradford - ...r>''The large table at the side of his easel was rarely tidy and was reminiscent of a fascinating junk shop – ginger jars, old earthenware jars filled with brushes, bulbous bottles, rag, squeezed tubes of paint and invariably, a fascinating bundle of many handkerchief-sized pieces of Japanese silks in wondrous colours, or skeins of thread all tangled together.''
When at work he always wore a Rembrandt type of smock. He favoured silk knitted ties and alternated a pearl tie pin with one of opal. Worn at a jaunty angle, his hat always sported a coloured feather. Kershaw’s paintings can be seen at Cartwright Hall, Bradford, Huddersfield Art Gallery, and the Hepworth Wakefield. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy for over 40 years, as well as at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.
