Description

This beautiful mid-20th-century oil painting by Swedish artist Sam Uhrdin (1886-1964) depicts a woman playing the guitar in a gently lit room at twilight.

Bathed in a warm radiance emanating from a cottage fireplace, she serenades the family with song. It’s a tonal masterclass rendered in bold expressive marks. A skilful representation of a quiet passing moment.

Sam Uhrdin was a master of interiors. Paying homage to the past rather than embracing the present. His exquisitely rendered scenes reminisce about a simpler time in rural Sweden. When the pace was reassuring and the love for one’s family was unquestionable. Such was his virtuosity, that he could work with feeling while retaining a high degree of finesse. He trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and his works are held in numerous public collections.

Signed in the lower left and held within a gilt frame, which is probably original.

FAQs

Early 20th-century Swedish painting often focused on realism, intimate domestic scenes, and a distinct mastery of light and shadow, capturing everyday moments with profound psychological depth and atmospheric warmth.

Authentic period works typically utilise oil paints applied to finely woven linen or cotton canvas, stretched over traditional wooden mitred stretcher frames and housed in hand-carved, gilded wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas age, pigment composition, artist signature, stretcher frame construction, and checking for appropriate craquelure and oxidation consistent with historical oil mediums.

An antique oil painting adds gravitas and narrative depth when contrasted against minimalist modern walls, serving as a sophisticated focal point above a sideboard or within a gallery display.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and occasionally consulting a professional conservator for careful surface cleaning.
