The Meiji period spans from 1868 to 1912, marked by the modernisation of Japan and a surge in the export of high-quality decorative arts, including intricate bronze metalwork, to Western markets.

These pieces are typically cast using the traditional lost-wax method, followed by meticulous hand-chasing, detailing of fur textures, and the application of chemical patination to achieve deep colouration.

Authentic pieces often feature finely chiselled details, naturalistic weight, a stable patina developed through age, and occasionally artist signatures or foundry marks inscribed on the underside.

Such decorative objects work well as focal points on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or side tables, adding historical weight and textural contrast to contemporary minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using commercial metal cleaners or water, as these can strip the historical patina and damage the surface finish.
