A little about the artist: William J. Shayer (b.1811-1892). fl 1825-1875. He lived in Southampton and painted mostly in Hampshire and the New Forest. He worked closely with his father, also William Shayer. Their work is often confused as both had almost identical subjects and style. A known and prolific artist both of Animals and Landscapes. Shayer exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1858 and 1885. Also at the Bristish Institute and the (Suffolk Street) Institute of British Artists and many provincial museums. A work by Shayer is currently exhibited at the Glasgow Art Gallery.
