FAQs

Nineteenth-century oil painting encompasses various movements from romanticism to realism, typically characterised by expressive brushwork, dramatic lighting, and a focus on nature, historical events, or everyday life.

Artworks from this period were primarily created using high-grade oil paints formulated with natural pigments bound in linseed oil, applied onto stretched canvas, linen, or wood panels.

Authenticity is determined by examining canvas ageing, stretcher frame construction, pigment composition, craquelure patterns, and artist signatures or historical gallery labels on the reverse.

An antique painting serves as a striking focal point when mounted on a neutral wall, illuminated with a dedicated picture light, and paired with minimalist furnishings to highlight its historic character.

Preservation involves keeping the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, and having professional cleaning or restoration performed only by qualified conservators.
