Bustling City Street on a Cold Day Ca 1920, Dutch Australian Paris Cityscape Pastel on Paper

1900 - 1920
Description

All the activity of the city condensed in a dense, dynamic street scene! Signed H. Hartog, it is likely to be an early work by Henricus Marie (Harry) den Hartog (1902-1984), dating from his stay in Paris in the early 1920s.

De Hartog was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and studied art at the Rotterdam Academy. After completing his studies, he continued his training in France.

In 1923, de Hartog moved to Australia and settled in Sydney. He quickly established himself as a leading figure in the local art scene, introducing cubism to Australian audiences and inspiring other artists to experiment with the style. He held several solo exhibitions in Sydney throughout the 1920s and 1930s, and his work was also exhibited in group shows in Australia and abroad.

Measuring 23 x 16 cm, the pastel on paper is signed at the lower right. The overall framed size is 38.5 x 29 cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Cityscape drawings from the 1920s frequently depicted urban life, architectural facades, and bustling streetways, capturing the atmosphere of post-war European capitals using tonal pastel and charcoal mediums.

Artists commonly executed pastel works using powdered pigment sticks bound with gum or resin, applied directly to toned, textured paper or card to create layered visual depth.

Authentic original pastels typically exhibit faint powdery surface textures, period-appropriate paper aging or foxing, hand signatures, and original framing remnants under glass.

Framed atmospheric cityscapes function effectively as focal points in reading nooks, entryways, or arranged within a gallery wall alongside contemporary line drawings and monochrome photography.

Pastels should be mounted behind anti-reflective UV glass with a thick mat board border to prevent the chalk from touching the glass, and displayed away from direct sunlight and humidity.
