A rare and historically significant Victorian military portrait depicting a young British Army officer, believed to be Ensign Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves (1840–1860) of the distinguished 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot.
Painted circa 1859–1860, this compelling British School oil on canvas portrait captures the youthful officer half-length, dressed in his scarlet Victorian infantry uniform with brass buttons, dark facings and crimson officer's sash.
The painting possesses considerable historical interest due to a handwritten inscription on the reverse reading:
"Conway Reeves – Died Aged 19 – Best Looking Man in British Army."
Extensive research strongly suggests the sitter is Conway Richard Dobbs Reeves of County Cork, Ireland, who served as an Ensign in the 58th Regiment of Foot and died aged only nineteen on 31 January 1860. Contemporary military notices, genealogical records and burial documentation support this probable identification, making this an especially poignant and evocative surviving likeness of a young officer whose promising military career was tragically cut short.
Executed in oil on canvas by a capable Victorian portrait painter, the work displays confident handling throughout. The artist has rendered the sitter's facial features with sensitivity and naturalism, while the vivid scarlet uniform contrasts beautifully against the darker background, creating excellent visual impact.
The portrait dates from the final years before significant Victorian Army reforms and provides an important visual record of a British infantry officer during the height of the British Empire. The dark facings visible on the collar are consistent with those historically associated with the 58th (Rutlandshire) Regiment of Foot, a regiment with a distinguished military history that later became part of the Northamptonshire Regiment.
The work is presented in an attractive later gilt frame and is ready for immediate display. The reverse retains a trade label for C. H. Campbell, Picture Framer, High Street, Bembridge, Isle of Wight, documenting part of the painting's later history.

Condition Report:
Presented in good antique condition commensurate with age. The painting displays areas of age-related craquelure, foxing, staining, surface wear, minor paint loss and some fading. Historic restoration is visible within the background area to the right of the sitter's head. The canvas has been professionally relined and revarnished during its lifetime, contributing to its preservation. The later gilt frame displays age-related wear including scuffs, scratches, minor losses and previous touch-ups. Overall, the portrait displays attractively and remains a highly decorative and historically interesting example of Victorian military portraiture.
