Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Antique oak benches originated primarily in domestic and institutional settings across Europe, designed for communal seating at long dining tables or in hallways. Early versions featured robust construction using heavy timber to withstand daily utility and heavy wear.

These pieces were traditionally built using dense domestic hardwoods, predominantly English or European oak, joined with pegged mortise and tenon joints. Hand-planed surfaces and minimal metal hardware characterised the authentic construction of earlier periods.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut tool marks, natural timber oxidisation, shrinkage splits, and traditional joint construction without modern screws. Wear patterns on the seat top and feet also indicate genuine age and period usage.

This piece can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing it with a minimalist dining table or placing it in an entrance hallway against a plain wall. The contrasting textures of weathered timber add warmth and structural grounding to modern minimalist schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable room humidity to prevent wood splitting, avoiding direct sunlight, and treating the surface periodically with natural beeswax. Avoid chemical cleaning agents and excess moisture to protect the historic patina.
