19th Century English Regency Oak Dumb Waiter

19th century
Description

An Early 19th Century English Oak Dumb Waiter or WhatNot.

Derived from the French étagère this is essentially a pair of standing shelves. Constructed in oak with fabulous figure and colour. The well chosen timber is probably pollard oak, a timber that was particularly popular amongst the leading makers in England in the early 19th century. Each tier has a deep tray moulding to three edges, the top has shaped and moulded central decorative elements which act as caps to the end supports. At their bases, the end supports terminate in short platforms with carved ornament and reeded bun feet. It has obvious similarities with certain Gillows pieces and, given its quality, it is possible that it was made in their workshops.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A dumb waiter table is a tiered piece of movable dining room furniture, originally developed in the eighteenth century to hold side dishes, condiments, and plates so servants were not required during meals.

Regency dumb waiters were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often featuring brass castors, turned columns, and carved trestle supports.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of hand-planed joinery, natural patination in the timber joints, aged fittings, and period-correct carving detail along the trestles and feet.

In modern interior schemes, a Regency dumb waiter serves effectively as a distinct drinks bar, a display unit for books and ceramics, or a versatile side table in a hallway or dining space.

To preserve the timber, clean surfaces with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct sunlight, radiators, and harsh chemical cleaners.
