Prometheus Antiques has dated this piece to the 1860s.
It has elements that relate to seventeenth century works and to the Rococo period, a typically Victorian combination of styles. The work is in excellent condition and is signed to the lower right on the pillar ‘K Bartley’. I can find no record of the artist and think this is because they were a purely commercial artist and didn’t exhibit. The painting is on a canvas by C.E.Clifford that dates the piece to the 1860’s. The large and substantial gilt frame is the original and in excellent condition with some very minor repairs. The whole has a wonderfully decorative appeal and a huge amount of presence.
