A fine and large still life oil on canvas depicting a vase of flowers in a landscape setting. The work is beautifully observed and rendered with a bold use of colour. The painting is typical of nineteenth century decorative still life with the vase presented on a marble pillar with landscape behind. It has elements that relate to seventeenth century works and to the Rococo period, a typically Victorian combination of styles. The work is in excellent condition and is signed to the lower right on the pillar ‘K Bartley’. I can find no record of the artist and think this is because they were a purely commercial artist and didn’t exhibit. The painting is on a canvas by C.E.Clifford that dates the piece to the 1860’s. The large and substantial gilt frame is the original and in excellent condition with some very minor repairs.
