A fine oil on canvas by the highly regarded landscape painter Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss 1859-1919. The painting is superbly worked in thick oils and wonderfully captures a bright sunny day casting shadows in a Sussex Village. The work is signed to the lower right Jose Weiss. Weiss was born in Paris in 1859, the son of John Frederick Francis Weiss a German from Alsace and Sylvie Marie Josephine Talbot who had an English background. He grew up in France developing a passion for painting but he only became an artist after a painting holiday in West Sussex. He decided to stay in England and make a living from painting and soon took up residence at Houghton House in the village of Houghton, Arundel, Sussex. In August 1899 he became a naturalized British subject and remained living and painting in Houghton for the rest of his life.
