A fine pair of late 18th, or early 19th, century Neapolitan Grand Tour oil paintings of classical Maenads after original frescoes found in the villas of the ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum, essential stops on the Grand Tours of the 18th Century. Both are signed, probably by local artists. Oil on canvas in period gilded frames. Beautiful, evocative examples. Italian, circa 1800.

Grand Tour paintings were created during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as souvenirs for aristocracy visiting historical sites across Italy. Works depicting figures like Maenads were inspired by ancient Greco-Roman wall frescoes discovered at Herculaneum and Pompeii.
