A Simple Table: Geranium and Oranges, 1934: Still Life by Berlin Woman Artist Oil on Canvas

1920 - 1940
Description

This simple and elegant still life depicts a potted Geranium and a bowl of Oranges on a table decorated with a vase and a tablecloth. Clearly, the artist chose objets close to her heart - and close at hand - to create a simple, warm and feminine display of domesticity.

Dating from the 1930s, this is a work by Elisabeth Pohlenz-Mostar (1904-1986) , a member of the Association of Berlin Woman Artists. She exhibited at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition, one of the the key events of the visual arts scene in Germany between 1893 and 1969. The painting comes from the collection of Marleen Lange, Berlin and Madeira.

Signed and dated 1934 at the upper right, our oil on canvas measures 41 x 51 cm and is presented in its original wooden frame. The overall framed size is 47 x 56.5 cm.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

German still life paintings from the 1930s often combine naturalistic realism with subtle expressionist influences, focusing on intimate domestic subjects, textured brushwork, and harmonious colour palettes.

Artists during this period predominantly used oil paints applied to stretched cotton or linen canvas, frequently mounted within molded wooden frames finished with painted or gilded surfaces.

Authentic oil paintings from the 1930s typically exhibit natural age craquelure, subtle surface patination, period-appropriate canvas stretching methods, and artist signatures consistent with period documentation.

A vintage floral still life works well placed above a sideboard, layered within a gallery wall, or displayed on a picture ledge alongside antique ceramics and muted textiles.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources, and dust the surface gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush rather than liquid cleaners.
