17th Century (?) Dutch Landscape Oil on Panel

17th century
Description

NICHOLAES BERCHEM (attr): an interesting and somewhat speculative OIL PAINTING ON PANEL, of a typical Continental bucolic scene. Beautifully painted very much in the 17th/18th century style, this fine painting depicts cattle and sheep watering in a stream, being attended by a mounted rider, and a lady washing herself, accompanied by her dog, with further figures and a horse and cart on the path to one side. All this takes place in front of a walled town, with the church and its steeple clearly visible, with mountains further behind in the distance. To the back of the wooden panel is a part label stating this is by Nicholaes Berghem of Haarlem (?) and dated 1654. In excellent condition, it measures 23 x 27.5 ins (58.5 x 70cms) including the excellent original gilded frame.

** NICHOLAES BERCHEM (1620-1683) was a prolific and highly regarded Dutch painter of “Italianate” pastoral scenes. His landscapes, of which he produced a great number, were painted in the Italian style ~ he travelled to Italy to soak up the “romanticism” of that country, and brought back home sketchbooks full of drawings of classical ruins and pastoral imagery. He was born in Haarlem; lived and worked in Amsterdam; moved back to Haarlem in 1670, and finally returned to Amsterdam where in died in 1683.
