FAQs

Nineteenth-century Scottish landscape art was heavily influenced by Romanticism, focusing on dramatic topography, lochs, rivers, and wildlife, often capturing the untamed wilderness of the Highlands.

Artists typically used rigid support panels made from wood or millboard, prepared with a gesso ground, and applied traditional oil-based pigments with hog bristle brushes and palette knives.

Authenticity is assessed through microscopic examination of the craquelure, pigment analysis, backing board condition, framing materials, and the presence of artist signatures or period exhibition labels.

Such pieces anchor a room by providing a strong focal point, pairing effectively with neutral wall colours, leather furnishings, and natural textures to create a sophisticated, layered look.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight and dramatic fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and avoid touching the paint surface or using chemical cleaners on the canvas or board.
