A Sunny Afternoon on the Exe, Oil Painting by William Williams of Plymouth

A fine landscape oil on canvas by the artist William Williams of Plymouth 1808-1895 and titled A sunny afternoon on the Exe. The work is typical of the artist with a scene that is romantic in tone capturing beautifully the feel of a summer’s day. The painting is signed to the lower left and the date appears to be 1880. William Williams 1808-1895 was born in Cornwall but spent most of his working life in Devon, mostly in Plymouth, but finally in Topsham where this work was painted. He specialised in capturing the landscapes of Devon and Cornwall, particularly around the rivers and coast in a style that was pure romanticism. Between 1841 and 1876, Williams exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, The British Institution, and the Suffolk Street Gallery, he was highly regarded in his time and his works are sort after today. This piece is in good condition with a light craquelure to the paint (showing in the photographs more than it does in reality) it has also had some minor old restoration all very well done. The work retains what is likely the original frame which has had some overpaint and restoration all very competently done. The whole is a great decorative work with a wonderful old country house look.
