Description

Decorative Georgian Long Wooden Window Seat/Hall Bench - later painted

• English Georgian Period circa 1810

• Solid Mahogany

• Later Specialist Hand Painted Finish and Design Work

• Faux Marble Finish to top

• Specialist Distressed Mottled Antique White paint finish

• Specialist Distressed Mottled Blue paint finish highlights

• Vitruvian scroll design to apron

• Inch thick seat with deep thumb moulded edge

• Apron with decorative shape next to legs

• Elegantly turned and tapering legs

• H: 47cm (18.5") W: 138cm (54.3") D: 32cm (12.6")

The solid top of the Hall Bench is over one inch in thickness and has been hand painted to give a Faux Marble finish with a feature thick coach line surrounding and above the thumb moulded edge. Below this is the apron which features the Neoclassical Vitruvian Scroll design, long used as an architectural feature and on furniture. The legs are elegantly turned and taper to give pleasing proportions. The base colour used is a Distressed Mottled Antique White and the veining to the marble, the coach lines, Vitruvian Scroll and feature lines are in Distressed Mottled Powdery Blue.

By their very nature the designs have to be made using geometric calculations to give the precise number of scrolls required and these are then drawn out by hand and framed within hand painted coach lines. The paints are colours used in Georgian times and are mixed to our traditional recipe and applied by hand in the traditional manner. We describe the colours and finish with more contemporary names which we hope are accurately descriptive.

Georgian window seats emerged during the 18th century, designed specifically to fit into the deep embrasures of large sash windows in country houses and townhouses. They provided a comfortable spot for reading, needlework, or enjoying natural light.

These pieces were typically constructed from native hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or pine, often featuring joined or mortise-and-tenon construction. Later iterations frequently underwent decorative surface treatments, including painted finishes applied during subsequent design periods.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery techniques, such as hand-cut dovetails or pegs, along with appropriate timber shrinkage and natural patina. Examining the undersides and interior joints often reveals tool marks and wear patterns consistent with eighteenth-century craftsmanship.

A window seat functions effectively positioned beneath a large window, along an entrance hallway, or placed at the foot of a bed. Pairing the wooden surface with a tailored linen cushion softens the silhouette while retaining its historical character.

Preserve painted wooden furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and avoiding direct sunlight or fluctuating humidity, which can cause the timber to crack. Wax polishes should be avoided on painted surfaces; instead, rely on gentle cleaning methods that protect the integrity of the finish.
