Sir William John Newton Portrait of a Cavalry Officer

19th century
Description

With his dashing good looks and handsome uniform, this young officer would not have been short of willing partners at the Assembly Room ball and may even have broken a few hearts in his day! The style of his military coat with its braiding and tall collar, together with his swept hair style, date the portrait to around 1810 or the Regency period.

This finely-drafted miniature is housed in its original gold plated frame, the reverse with a glazed aperture filled with plaited hair.

Sir William John Newton (1785-1869) trained under his father as an engraver before becoming a portrait miniaturist. His London studio attracted a distinguished clientele and he was appointed miniature painter to William IV & Queen Adelaide in 1833 before being knighted by Queen Victoria in 1837. His works are critically well acclaimed with examples held in the Royal Collection and at the V & A Museum.
