FAQs

Victorian genre painting typically depicts scenes from everyday life, often carrying narrative, moral, or sentimental themes that resonated with the middle-class audience of the era.

These works were typically created using oil paints applied to stretched canvas or wooden panels, framed in elaborate mouldings made of gesso over wood, often gilded or painted.

Authenticating involves examining the canvas weave, pigment composition, stretcher frame construction, artist signatures, and underlying craquelure patterns consistent with nineteenth-century ageing.

Pairing a traditional gilt-framed painting with modern minimalist walls creates a striking contrast, allowing the historical narrative and rich tones to serve as a focal point.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity and temperature levels, and clean surfaces gently with a soft, dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners.
