Description

These are a truly special piece of early Religious art. These are a pair of 16th century carved wooden bishops from the Picardy region in France. These stand a very impressive 5ft 5inches tall and are extremely well carved. The decoration is beautifully done and what makes these even more special is the huge amount of original gesso paint still present on both. The bishops are one of the finest examples of carved Religious art I have had the pleasure to own.

These are both solid wood and very heavy but they do free stand or can be hung with the metal loop on their back.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Sixteenth-century ecclesiastical sculpture is characterised by detailed hand-carved vestments, theological symbolism, and traditional craftsmanship often originating from European workshops and churches.

These pieces were typically carved from heavy hardwoods such as oak or walnut, utilizing hand tools, mortise and tenon joinery where applicable, and finished with natural waxes or historic pigments.

Authenticity is determined by examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, natural oxidisation, grain patterns, and the consistency of wear appropriate to the period.

Interior designers often place substantial historical figures as focal points against neutral walls or within architectural alcoves to balance contemporary spatial design with textural depth.

Preservation requires stable indoor humidity levels, avoidance of direct sunlight, and gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth without applying modern chemical polishes.
