Early 20th-century animal portraiture frequently captured domestic pets and working dogs with realistic detail, often reflecting the strong sentimental attachment to animals during the Edwardian period.

Artists typically used oil paints applied to prepared wooden panels, millboard, or cardboard, secured within gesso and gilt wood frames.

Authentication involves examining the pigment ageing, board composition, framing techniques, and looking for period-appropriate signatures or artist attribution marks.

Grouping traditional paintings on neutral walls creates a striking focal point, blending historical character with contemporary minimalist spaces.

Keep the artwork out of direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels, and dust the surface gently with a soft, dry brush without using liquid cleaners.
